Default A long time ago, in a galaxy far far .. oops

Kidding

I have been into model trains since I was a youth and a couple years ago, I found an interest in LGB. I had always written them off as expensive and unrealistic... but after order a couple freight cars (just the cars mind you no engine, track or transformer) I found them to be of very high quality and did resemble many prototypes after I did some research.

The first two cars I got were the Chiqiuta Bananawagen and the Lowenbrau wagon. They sat on display for some time as I pursued other things...

Eventually later in the year I ran across a fellow selling his father in law's train collection, mostly Lionel. But he did have some LGB pieces, at decent prices from what I could surmise.

The engines he had included a 2085 Hanomag mallet, a 2071 Zillertalbahn loco, a 2051 DB Diesellok and a 2040 RhB crocodile, all with boxes and seemingly in decent shape. I talked with the fellow and then sent him a payment for all 4 locos

A couple weeks later I received two large boxes from USPS. My first LGB locos had arrived!! This was a very exciting time and I unpacked everything carefully. I had not seen these models in person before, always in pictures, so I was really seeing them for the first time.

The engines were indeed in very good shape just a little dusty. But the size!! They always look bigger once you have them in front of your face!

However, at this point I still didn't have any track or transformer, so I could not ever run them... A pity, and it wasn't until a couple months later that I ordered a starter set second-hand from eBay which contained a circle of R1 track and a 1 amp transformer (as well as my first Stainz!)

But that is enough for now. I will continue the story later!

Neat story! Looking forward to the updates.

I don't have much of a LGB story.. My grandfather had a collection when I was younger, sadly all of it was auctioned off after he passed. I would have liked to have a couple pieces.. oh well.

Smile My Beginnings in G scale

I have always liked trains and modeling (trains, boats, planes, etc.) My wife has always been intrigued with scale modeling of doll houses and she likes to work in the yard doing gardening and landscaping. When we discovered garden railroading, it was perfect for us to be able to "play" together with our hobbies. Next, we just needed to find the right yard and time (after the kids were pretty much grown) to start looking more seriously into the hobby. One day while we were wandering through one of the local garden centers, the local Garden Railway Society had a display set up. I started talking to a couple of guys and the rest, as they say, is history. We are happy to be on board.

I'm 38 years old, I had several HO scale collections as a young child and early teen. One cold day way back in December of 1996 I came home from school and there was a LGB starter set running around the Christmas tree. My father had purchased it at a Chicago area department store called Marshall Fields & Co, the train was actually a limited edition 1986 Marshall Fields train. Over the next few years my dad and I got very hooked on LGB and G scale trains, the entire basement was a train table. I was getting to that age where girls and fast cars were the most important things in life and I kind of forgot about "toys" for a while. The years passed, my mom and dad moved away and a few years ago they came back to visit for Christmas, low and behold dad handed me that very same Marshall Fields train, near mint condition, all the original parts, box and all. I then began the tradition of running that very same train around my tree. In addition to that I started getting hooked on trains again, I began to aquire various cars and locomotives for the past couple of years but I have a very serious addiction to limited edition passanger starter sets. I have some very rare and clean examples. I just found this forum so look for me to post up some pics of some of my LGB stuff in the very near future.
